- Favorite: The team or player expected to win, usually indicated by a negative number (e.g., -150).
- Underdog: The team or player expected to lose, indicated by a positive number (e.g., +130).
2. Point Spread Bets
Point spread betting levels the playing field between two teams. In this type of bet, the stronger team must win by a certain number of points (the spread) for your bet to be successful. The underdog, on the other hand, can either win the game or lose by fewer points than the spread.- Example: If Team A is favored to win by 5 points, the spread is -5. You would need Team A to win by more than 5 points for your bet to win.
- Covering the Spread: If Team B loses by 4 points or wins, they have “covered the spread.”
3. Over/Under Bets (Totals)
Over/Under bets, also known as totals, allow you to wager on the combined score of both teams in a game. Sportsbooks set a line, and you can bet whether the final score will be over or under that line.- Example: If the total for a game is set at 45 points, you can bet on whether the final score will be over or under 45 points.
4. Parlay Bets
Parlay bets combine multiple bets into one. To win a parlay, all selections must be correct. This type of bet is riskier but offers a higher payout than individual bets, as the odds are multiplied.- Example: If you bet on three games with respective odds of 2.0, 1.5, and 1.8, the combined odds of your parlay would be 2.0 x 1.5 x 1.8.
Teaser bets are a variation of parlay bets. In a teaser, you can adjust the point spread in your favor for multiple games. However, this comes with a lower payout compared to standard parlays.
- Example: If you have two games with spreads of -7 and -3, you might adjust them to -1 and +3, respectively.
6. Prop Bets
Proposition bets, or prop bets, are wagers on specific events within a game that may not directly affect the final outcome. These can range from player performances to in-game events.- Examples:
- Will a certain player score a touchdown?
- How many rebounds will a player have in a basketball game?
7. Futures Bets
Futures bets are placed on events that will happen in the future, such as who will win a championship or a specific tournament. These bets often have longer odds, as they are more uncertain.- Example: Betting on a team to win the Super Bowl at the beginning of the season offers potentially high rewards if they succeed.
8. In-Play Betting
In-play betting, also known as live betting, allows you to place bets during a game as the action unfolds. This type of betting provides dynamic odds based on the current state of the game.- Example: You can bet on the next team to score or the outcome of the next quarter.
