The quoted payout includes more than the book’s view of the outcome.

A bookmaker’s fair estimate is its underlying assessment of a team’s championship probability. The posted odds are the commercial version of that estimate: they can incorporate margin, market demand, existing liability, and uncertainty about a season that may run for months.

For a quick conversion, +400 in American odds equals 5.00 in decimal odds. A $100 bet returns $500 including the stake, and the implied probability is:

Power ratings compress many signals into one estimate of a team’s current strength. Books can then use that estimate to project future matchups, playoff paths, and ultimately championship probability.
